Room 14 has been trying to convince their teacher that it is a good idea to adopt one animal from the zoo. See what reasons they came up with.

I desperately think that the class should be allowed to have a rhino. I’m so crazy, and lazy, that I should have a pet rhino. He could lift my school bag. He could carry me to school and home at the end of the day. I would never be late.

His skin is 1.5 – 5cm deep, this means it will keep him safe from animals that could hurt him. So this means I won’t need to take him to the vet.

The rhino is big, tough and strong. I want a rhino to help keep my family safe.

These are the reasons why I want a rhino.

I think I should have a pet lion. I could take him anywhere, like to the zoo to see some other lions.

I would daydream all day and all night about him. I think it is a really good idea, but he might eat everyones writing books, and he might eat everyones homework books too!

If we had a lion, he could protect us from anything dangerous.

So, that’s why I want a pet lion.

Hami

At night I can’t sleep without a pet. Am I ever going to get it! The pet that I want is a cheetah.

A good reason is that he is medium size. He can hide in places that hunters can’t find him. It won’t be nearly as big as a giraffe. And a cheetah is way quieter than an elephant.

I think that’s three good reasons, what do you think?

I certainly, really think that the class should have a pet. I think we should get a hamster.

Firstly, it is quite small. It is small enough to fit in a cage, so it won’t distract us. The predators might not see it because it is small.

Secondly, it is busy eating all the time, so it won’t come out of the cage.

Thirdly, it will keep us company because I will play with it like a friend. I could even give toys, so its more playful.

So, can Room 14 have a pet?

I would like to wake up tomorrow morning with a pet gibbon.

Firstly, it can wake us sleepy heads up in the morning, because I love to sleep late.

We’ve got a ton of stuff to feed it. I found out that gibbons eat insects, seeds, tree bark and leaves.

Third of all, the gibbon could show me how to climb to the top of a very tall tree. I can climb little trees, but not high ones.

That is why I want a pet gibbon.

Jethro

I absolutely want a pet. The pet that I want is a kiwi.

If I had a kiwi pet, I could read to it for S.S.R. It’s really quiet to read to, and if I read to it every day my reading will get much better.

It only comes out at night. There are less people around at night, so it will be much safer.

A kiwi will be easy to feed. Kiwis eat earthworms, fruit, seeds and insects.

So, that’s why I want a kiwi as a pet.

I desperately think we should get a pet kangaroo. I can’t sleep without one!

Kangaroos can guard the classroom so no one could take stuff that is precious.

Kangaroos eat grass and leaves. We have lots of grass and leaves in the school already.

Kangaroos can jump ten feet high. He could jump on the roof, if someone kicks the ball up there.

So, that is why I should get a kangaroo.

I would definitely love to have a meerkat.

A meerkat is only small, like a cat. It’s not big like a fat hippo. It will fit in the classroom.

Meerkats are fun to play with, and they would like for us to play with them. They are fun and cute.

Meerkats eat plants. We already have lots of plants in our school, and also lots of grass.

So, that’s why I’d love to have a meerkat.

I desperately want a parrot.

It is the right size for a class because it is not as small as a mouse, and not as big as a giraffe. Most parrots are about 25 cm big.

You can carry it in its own cage, because it is very light to carry.

It eats its own food, because it does not like human food. I found out that a parrot eats seeds, fruit, nectar, pollen and buds.

That is why I want a parrot.

I desperately wish to have a meerkat. They can be camouflage. This would help to protect it from predators who might want to attack it. They are also small/middle size. It is easy to carry around in a cage, and we could let it go outside to explore. We would be able to go to the shops to buy food for it, they would have the right food at the pet store, or we could ask at the zoo.

So, that’s why I desperately wish to have a meerkat.

I demand you get me a puppy.

I think I should get a small puppy, so when my puppy goes to hunt for bones, the big predators won’t see the small puppy. This will keep my puppy safe. You could pick it up.

I want a puppy because it can give you exercise by running with the dog. It is fun to play with.

It could also sniff your vegetables. It could be a guard dog.

So, that’s why I think I should have a puppy.

Hi, my name is Suhayra and I want a guinea pig. If you get a guinea pig, it won’t be nearly as loud as an elephant. Guinea pigs are small. They don’t have a long tail. They can’t escape from a cage.

They eat grass and vegetables, they are vegetarians. They also like hay.

They are so cute. They have really soft fur and it feels so nice when you stroke them.

So, that’s why I am desperate to have a guinea pig.

I demand to have a hamster in Room 14. I think it’s a good idea to have a hamster.

He will live in a cage, so he won’t get lost. Hamsters eat seeds and pellets. I can buy hamster food from the pet shop. It won't cost much money to buy pet food.

It could be our friend and would be fun to play with. They have exercise wheels, so they will always be healthy. That is why I want a hamster

I certainly would like a parrot.

It is small, and because it is small it could fit in the classroom. If I had an elephant, I couldn’t take it anywhere, but if I had a small parrot I could take it everywhere I went.

If you forgot something, it could tell you what to do because it can remember.

If you get bored, it could play with you because you would be interested.

That is why I want a parrot.

Listen to this! I would love a bat as a pet.

The bat is small, it is so small we can get it a cage. This means I could carry it with me.

They are omnivorous, which means they eat anything available. At lunch, I could get some leaves and grass to feed it.

A bat flys 31  kilometres per hour. It would be quick around the classroom and may even catch falling things.

That is why I want a pet bat.

Hemi

I definitely want a kangaroo for a pet. I went to the zoo recently and I got to see one.

They have powerful legs, so they can kick the ball with us. If the ball goes on the roof then the kangaroo can get it.

They can fight the bad guys. The males are good at fighting. Kangaroos are very strong and fight using their front paws and by kicking with their hind legs. They can protect me if I am in trouble.

I know that kangaroos don’t eat meat. They eat leaves and grass. We don’t need to pay for meat which is expensive. Leaves and grass are easy to get from outside. We have heaps at school, at the park, or at home.

I absolutely positively wish that I had a spider monkey. The mother spider monkey protects the baby spider monkey. When it grows up, it will be an adult spider monkey. He would be happy swinging tree to tree and eating bananas. He stays active every day. He sleeps in a tree, this is a safe place for him to sleep.

That is why I want a spider monkey.

I absolutely positively wish I had a giant tortoise. The giant tortoise has a strong shell. If he falls from a high place it doesn’t get hurt. The shell protects him from getting hurt.

The giant tortoise doesn’t make a noise. The whole class won't get distracted.

They sometimes like to eat cactus. I would find out lots of other things the giant tortoise eats too.

I definitely want a parrot. The parrot is the perfect size to have for a pet. The kea is a type of parrot. There are not many keas left, so I would like to take care of one. I found out that keas are as clever as a four year old. That’s why I should have one as a pet.

Hi, my name is Saskia and I think Room 14 should get a zebra. It could sleep on the school field at night. It would even eat the grass, so we wouldn’t need a lawnmower. It is the same colour as New Zealand’s colours. These are black and white.

So, get me a zebra!

I think it is a really good idea to have a spider monkey. It could teach us how to do the monkey bars (because the word in “monkey bars” has the word monkey). It has a boring colour, so I can work. If it was a bright colour, I would day dream about it, and wouldn’t get any work done.

It is sixteen centimetres tall. Its weight is about 11kg for males, and 9kg for females. It eats yellow bananas (just like us).

Hello, my name is Navneet. Last Tuesday we went to the zoo. We saw lots of animals. My favourite animal was the LION!

A lions scientific name is Panthera Leo. He lives for 15 years. A lions family is felidae cat. They weigh lots. A male lion weighs  199kg, and a female is 130kg.

I would like a lion as a pet.
